Ali (ALi ⻩阿历) was born and raised in a post-9/11 New York, complete with racist bullies and an overwhelming pressure to conform. After spending her early childhood fruitlessly chasing the blonde haired, blue eyed American dream, she developed a love of world history and became inspired to study the languages and stories of people across the globe - her people. Ali began working towards a career in China after listening to both its traditional and its contemporary music, and since then has strived to foster within her own art a harmonious balance of East and West. Rhythmic grooves of modern pop, electronic, and even trap music are fused with sounds and instruments from China, Mongolia, Ireland, and Scandinavia - all of which Ali has worked to traceher roots back to.
The low, bassy overtone and throat singing of the Mongolian steppe, the fiddles, jaw harps, and booming drums of Norse tradition, the delicate harp and triplet meter of Ireland, and the shrill yet jubilant tones of Chinese strings and percussion... All come together in the compositions of Ali, as she seeks to make peace with herself through making her music.
Ali has worked with the biggest indie record label in China, Modern Sky, and its folk-specializing subsidiary Pollux Music to produce her experiments into reality. Starting in the year 2019, Ali has accumulated composition credits on releases from the band
Tong, such as《夜有所梦》, and production credits on singles from the band Floruit Show. Ali continues to collaborate with musicians and entities in China but her newest project is to be
completely self funded, self produced, written, recorded, mixed, and mastered at her home base in Boston.
The single, titled “Baby (Said Yeah)”, is a sonic ode to the upbeat Mandopop of the early 2000’s, while incorporating elements of hip hop, electronica, and the ethereal shimmers of Norse folk music. All the while, its lyrics contemplate a misery known to
everyone on Earth - a warning tale of what happens when East and West, modern and ancient, cannot coexist.
